Imtiaz Ali (born 16 June 1971) is an Indian film director, actor and writer. His 2007 film Jab We Met was a huge success in India.[1] His 2009 film Love Aaj Kal was a bigger success and was declared a super-hit by Box Office India.[2] His recent movie Rockstar (2011) has been declared Average at the box office.[3]

Early life

Imtiaz Ali had his origins in old Patna, Bihar.[4] His grandfather, Hamid Hasan, was a rich nawab and a freedom fighter in Bihar.[5] He was born in a Muslim family and was brought up in Jamshedpur.[6] He had his early education in Patna, Ranchi and Jamshedpur,[7] and later attended Hindu College in Delhi, where he took part in college theater. He started Ibtida the dramatic society of Hindu College.[8] Thereafter he moved to Mumbai and did a course in marketing and advertising from Xavier Institute of Communication.[9][10] Imtiaz is married to Preety Ali.[11]

Career

Ali began his career directing TV programs including Kurukshetra for Zee TV and Imtehaan for Star Plus.[12] After about seven years of this, he moved on to Bollywood films, starting with Socha Na Tha in 2005 with Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia. Despite its box office failure, the movie Socha Na Tha won critical acclaim.

His next film, Jab We Met, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, was a box office success. His movie Love Aaj Kal that followed, starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone, was also very successful.[13] His latest film RockStar saw a very good opening and collected Rs. 34 crores in its first weekend.[14]
