List of Baldur's Gate characters

Baldur's Gate NPCs are non-player characters (NPCs) which interact with the player in the Baldur's Gate series of computer games. Many of these characters can interact with each other during the game, and some of these characters can also join the player's party.

The NPCs recruited become playable characters directly controlled by the player. The player can employ a maximum number of five NPC party members at any one time, requiring the player to find a balance between strong melee warriors, characters who wield divine magic, characters who wield arcane magic, and those who provide different types of auxiliary support, such as thieves.

Good

Name Voice actor Race Class Alignment Description
Ajantis Jason Marsden Human Paladin Lawful Good Righteous and somewhat naive, Ajantis Ilvastarr is a newly trained paladin operating under the Order of Radiant Heart. He has been sent by his superior Keldorn Firecam to investigate and wipe out the bandits plaguing the Sword Coast. He is a follower of Helm and hails from Waterdeep.
Alora Amber Hood Halfling Thief Chaotic Good An excessively cheerful and sweet halfling girl, whose curiosity prompts her to frequently poke her nose into forbidden and dangerous territory. When she was younger, her curiosity caused trouble for her parents, whose attempts to stifle her personality inspired her to leave on her own.
Coran Brian George Elf Fighter/Thief Chaotic Good Coran is an adventurous and womanizing archer. He originally lived in the Forest of Tethir, but left due to dissatisfaction with its relative calmness. He will flirt with any female party member. He has unknowingly fathered a half-elf child with a young mage in Baldur's Gate after a brief fling, enraging the mage's husband.
Dynaheir Jennifer Hale Human Invoker Lawful Good Dynaheir is "wychlaran" witch from Rashemen and is traveling alongside her champion Minsc, who has sworn to protect her. She and Minsc have been sent to examine if the prophecy of the Bhaalspawn is true. In her search, she is taken captive by a group of gnolls and held prisoner at their island stronghold. She shows herself to be a capable wizard, but has a very steel-set attitude, not thinking much of what anyone else has to offer. Canonically, the events of Baldur's Gate are completed with Dynaheir in the party.
Imoen Melissa Disney Human Thief Neutral Good A childhood friend of the player character, who has acted like a little sister to the protagonist for all of their childhood. She is the first character that offers to join the protagonist, near the beginning of the game. Orphaned as a child and raised by Winthrop the innkeeper of Candlekeep, her origins are just as obscure as the player character's. According to BioWare writer Luke Kristjanson,[1] Her character was a late addition to fill a non-psychotic-thief gap in the early levels. We had no recording budget left, so I assembled her lines by editing voice-over left from a scrapped demo. The original character was a guard named Pique. That's why she has no standalone confrontations / interactions with other party members. Canonically, the events of Baldur's Gate are completed with Imoen in the party.
Khalid Jim Meskimen Half-Elf Fighter Neutral Good Jaheira's husband, and almost her polar opposite. Khalid is a peace-loving warrior with a pronounced stutter. Like Jaheira, he is a member of the Harpers. Jaheira and Khalid were friends of Gorion, and Gorion leaves instructions for the protagonist to meet with them after he is killed in an ambush at the beginning of the game. Canonically, the events of Baldur's Gate are completed with Khalid in the party.
Kivan Rob Paulsen Elf Ranger Chaotic Good A powerful elf archer, Kivan's wife was killed by the ogre bandit leader Tazok, and as a result he is on a quest of vengeance to kill ogres and bandits and to ultimately hunt down Tazok as revenge for his wife's death. Kivan is undiplomatic, cold, and extremely gruff; however, he also compliments his companions regardless of whether they thank him or not, and frequently refers to the entire group as a whole ("It is time for *us* to rest"), as opposed to referring only to himself. If placed in the lead position, his response is the most humble of all the companions.
Minsc Jim Cummings Human Ranger Neutral Good Minsc is a berserker ranger, with a strong desire to uphold good and be heroic, though with an extreme fervor that causes those around him to regard him as possibly insane. His animal companion is a hamster named Boo, who he believes is a "miniature giant space hamster" and consults for advice. Minsc is originally tasked with serving as a bodyguard to the witch Dynaheir as part of a rite of passage. Canonically, the events of Baldur's Gate are completed with Minsc in the party.
Yeslick Bill Farmer Dwarf Fighter/Cleric Lawful Good Yeslick Orothiar is a laid-back, good-natured dwarven cleric of Moradin and Clangeddin Silverbeard. He was once a blacksmith of the Iron Throne, but was betrayed when he casually mentioned the location of his clan's long abandoned ore mine to them. He is encountered as one of the Iron Throne's prisoners.

Neutral

Name Voice actor Race Class Alignment Description
Branwen Bernadette Sullivan Human Cleric True Neutral A loyal warrior maiden of the god Tempus. Branwen was turned to stone by the bandit mage Tranzig, and ended up as a circus attraction. If the party uses a scroll of stone to flesh to cure her of her condition, she will offer to join them in their quest. Later in the adventure the party will come face to face with Tranzig, and after defeating him, Branwen will remain in the party.
Faldorn Heidi Shannon Human Druid True Neutral Faldorn is a member of the Shadow Druids, a militant sect of druids that believes in the violent struggle of Nature against Man. She disagrees vehemently with Jaheira and her mainstream Druidic views of man co-existing peacefully alongside nature. However, despite her militant beliefs, Faldorn's speech and behavior is mellow and laid-back.
Garrick Dee Bradley Baker Human Bard Chaotic Neutral A free-spirited bard with a most lively outlook on life and love. He was part of a popular troupe called the Dale Wind Troubadours, but left after he discovered the performances were used to distract the audience from thievery. He sings several tunes, mostly about his own bravery.
Jaheira Heidi Shannon Half-Elf Fighter/Druid True Neutral A Druid warrior and member of the Harpers, Jaheira is strong and intelligent, but also very proud, causing her to be highly domineering and overly self-confident. As a Druid, she must observe a keen balance in her way of life, and demands the same from her companions. Gorion leaves instructions to meet her and her husband Khalid after he is killed. Canonically, the events of Baldur's Gate are completed with Jaheira in the party.
Quayle Jeff Bennett Gnome Cleric/Illusionist Chaotic Neutral Quayle is foul-tempered and arrogant and believes that he is a genius while others around him are unintelligent. He worships Baravar Cloakshadow and is convinced that he has nearly mastered sorcery.
Safana Diane Pershing Human Thief Chaotic Neutral Safana is a sultry female thief with a dark history and a sensuous demeanor, who has always gotten through life by using her feminine wiles to manipulate men into doing her bidding. She grew up in Calimport as the daughter of a nobleman, but was frustrated by his protectiveness and ran away to join a pirate crew. She fell out of favor with the captain and escaped from the ship when it was at the port of Baldur's Gate.
Skie Grey DeLisle Human Thief True Neutral The innocent and naive daughter of Duke Entar Silvershield, Skie Silvershield enjoys sneaking out of the safety of her father's well-guarded estate, and holds unrealistic dreams of a life of adventure. She awaits being "rescued" by Eldoth, her lover. Once on the road, however, she complains frequently.
Xan Jeff Bennett Elf Enchanter Lawful Neutral Xan is an enchanter of the Greycloak clan of elves from Evereska, who has been sent to investigate the political turmoil of the Sword Coast when he is captured and held prisoner by the Iron Throne. When the player's character encounters him, he is unarmed and severely injured. He is very pessimistic, and often makes negative comments while expressing surprise at success.

Evil

Name Voice actor Race Class Alignment Description
Edwin Jim Meskimen Human Conjurer Lawful Evil Edwin Odesseiron is an arrogant member of the Red Wizards of Thay, and has been dispatched to the Sword Coast region to assassinate Dynaheir. When Edwin is first encountered, he asks for the player's help in hunting her down. This quest is in direct contrast to the one received from Minsc, who wishes to save Dynaheir from a band of gnolls. Edwin enjoys insulting the player character with his haughty and sarcastic remarks, and frequently mutters under his breath about how he intends to manipulate and overthrow his fellow party members.
Eldoth Neil Ross Human Bard Neutral Evil Eldoth Kron is a sleazy, thrill-seeking dilettante who makes a living seducing rich women and living off their money. His latest scheme is to elope with his current lover, Skie Silvershield, then blackmail her father by claiming to have "kidnapped" her and threatening to harm her if he is not paid on a regular basis. A male chauvinist, Eldoth treats Skie quite badly, which earns him the hatred of both Garrick and Shar-Teel.
Kagain John Mariano Dwarf Fighter Lawful Evil Kagain is a greedy mercenary who runs a caravan escort service out of his shop in Beregost. He asks the player to help him search for a particularly important lost caravan carrying the son of Duke Silvershield, but when he learns that he has lost the caravan, wary of Silvershield's wrath, Kagain decides to abandon his business and accompany the player's party on their adventure.
Montaron Earl Boen Halfling Fighter/Thief Neutral Evil Montaron is Xzar's partner. Less outlandish than the game's other evil NPCs, his style tends more towards the subtly threatening rather than the flamboyantly egomaniacal. While he seems to despise Xzar, his fear of his superiors' wrath prevents him from acting on that hatred. Montaron and Xzar are members of the evil group known as the Zhentarim, who have dispatched them to investigate the iron shortage threatening the city of Baldur's Gate, for which the Zhentarim themselves have been unjustly suspected.
Shar-Teel Jennifer Darling Human Fighter Chaotic Evil Shar-Teel Dosan is an amazonian warrior woman who enjoys humiliating male adventurers by challenging them to duels and defeating them. If she is defeated in a duel by a male member of the player's party, she is impressed and grudgingly pledges to join the group. Extremely aggressive and bloodthirsty, Shar-Teel has a strong hatred of males, and the Flaming Fist mercenary company in particular. At the end of the game, it is revealed that Shar-Teel is the daughter of Angelo Dosan, a lieutenant in the Flaming Fist who is also secretly in the employ of Sarevok.
Tiax John Mariano Gnome Cleric/Thief Chaotic Evil Tiax is a short-tempered, megalomaniacal gnome with unrealistic goals of world domination. He is a cleric of Cyric, the current God of Murder, and like his patron deity is quite mad.
Viconia Grey DeLisle Drow Elf Cleric Neutral Evil Exiled from the Underdark, Viconia DeVir is attempting to make a life for herself on the surface. Having renounced Lolth after refusing to kill a baby, Viconia worships Shar. She looks down harshly on surface-dwellers and her inexperience leaves surface customs and laws strange to her. Although she despises compassion and weakness, she is still significantly more polite than the game's other evil NPCs.
Xzar Frank Welker Human Necromancer Chaotic Evil Xzar is dubbed "the Mad Wizard" by his companion Montaron, and Xzar seemingly suffers from split personality. His grasp on reality seems to be somewhat tenuous, causing him to occasionally make unusual outbursts. He wants the player to journey with him and his companion Montaron to the Nashkel mines in order to investigate strange rumors there. Xzar has been sent by the clandestine organization the Zhentarim, to learn the origins of the sudden iron shortage sweeping the Sword Coast region, as rumors of the Zhentarim's involvement within the iron scheme has put the evil organization under increased scrutiny. Xzar and Montaron hate each other and are only together because they work for the Zhentarim. Despite his personality, Xzar is in fact held in high esteem by his superiors.

Good

Name Voice actor Race Class Alignment Description
Aerie Kath Soucie Avariel Elf Cleric/Mage Lawful Good Aerie lived in Faenya-Dail until she was captured by slavers and sold to the circus, where she was kept in a cage which caused her wings to atrophy until they had to be forcibly removed. She is encountered in Waukeen's Promenade, where she is working in the circus under ringmaster Quayle, who saved her from the previous ringmaster. Once the circus has been cleared of its evil illusions, she may join the party. Minsc may eventually adopt her as his new witch. She is naive, physically weak, and sometimes childish, but she is highly intelligent. She dually venerates her divine patron, the gnome god Baervan Wildwanderer, and her traditional Avariel goddess, Aerdrie Faenya. It is possible for a male protagonist to romance her. If the romance continues into the Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal expansion, she has the protagonist's child, though Aerie will refuse if the protagonist is of evil alignment. Although kind and often caring of her friends, Aerie still holds in thoughts of her wings, and often becomes depressed when speaking of her past.
Imoen Melissa Disney Human Thief/Mage Neutral Good Troubled by torture inflicted upon her by the main antagonist Irenicus, Imoen loses some of her zeal from the first game, especially as it dawns on her that she, too, is a Bhaalspawn. Still, Imoen remains somewhat cheerful and kind towards her companions. She remains a faithful companion to the player character and is one of the fundamental characters in the main plot. Much of the game is centralized on rescuing her. She can be found alongside the player at the start of the game.
Keldorn Roger L. Jackson Human Inquisitor Lawful Good Keldorn Firecam is a dedicated paladin of Torm and the superior of Ajantis. He is experienced and wise. He has a sub-quest involving his family where the player character can voluntarily allow him to leave the party.
Mazzy Jennifer Hale Halfling Fighter Lawful Good Mazzy Fentan is a brave fighter who wanted to be a Paladin, though being a halfling disallowed this. She and her Fentan Knights sally forth all over Amn from their town of Trademeet doing good deeds.
Minsc Jim Cummings Human Ranger Chaotic Good Minsc is a berserker ranger, with a strong desire to uphold good and be heroic, though with an extreme fervor that causes those around him to regard him as possibly insane. His animal companion is a hamster named Boo, who he believes is a "miniature giant space hamster" and consults for advice. Minsc is originally tasked with serving as a bodyguard to the witch Dynaheir as part of a rite of passage. After Dynaheir is killed by the mage Jon Irenicus, Minsc offers his services to the protagonist in the pursuit of justice.
Nalia Grey DeLisle Human Thief/Mage Neutral Good The daughter of a lord, Nalia de'Arnise has little in common with other nobles and regularly sneaks out of her castle at night to help the poor and needy. Though compassionate, she can be noticeably haughty; she is willing to help those lower in class, but not willing to entirely forget their class distinctions. Nalia teams up with the player character to help save her family home from attack. In the Throne of Bhaal, Nalia undergoes a change of heart that makes her more genuinely compassionate towards the lower classes and more pragmatic in terms with her goals.
Valygar Jeff Osterhage Human Stalker Neutral Good Valygar's family has long lived in the shadow of magic. His own mother went mad from it and was destroyed; consequently, Valygar is disdainful for all things magical. If the player character is a mage or other frequent practitioner of magic, Valygar will be badly predisposed to him, especially if the magic in question is often used to perform ill deeds. He is found as a criminal wanted by the Cowled Wizards.

Neutral

Name Voice actor Race Class Alignment Description
Anomen Rob Paulsen Human Fighter/Cleric Lawful Neutral Anomen Delryn is an acolyte of the Most Noble Order of the Radiant Heart. He is vain and frequently brags about battles he most likely never fought. Depending on the player's actions, he may succeed or fail at his knighthood quest, which can change his alignment to either Lawful Good or Chaotic Neutral. If the player character is female, she may establish a romance with Anomen.
Cernd Jason Marsden Human Shapeshifter True neutral Cernd is detained in a prison located in the town of Trademeet. He needs the player character's assistance in investigating attacks upon the town. Cernd has an even, calm disposition and a habit of overusing nature-related metaphors. Cernd's lycanthropy allows him to take the form of a werewolf. Cernd was once a city dweller, resulting in some loose ends from his former life resurfacing, as he sets foot in Athkatla.
Haer'Dalis Michael Bell Tiefling Bard Chaotic Neutral Haer'Dalis has the blood of a fiend within his ancestry, giving him unusual characteristics, among these being his blue hair and an aura that makes Primes, or dwellers of the Prime Material Plane, nervous. He is witty and charming, having crossed the planes with a group of troubadours who have set up a temporary home in a playhouse beneath the Five Flagons Inn in the Bridge District of Athkatla.
Jaheira Heidi Shannon Half-Elf Fighter/Druid True neutral Her character mellows a little from the first installment due to the death of her husband Khalid, and probably also due to the strife that she encounters with her fellow party members. However, she still enjoys nothing more than to take authority in certain situations, and it shows in her banter with other party members whom she perceives as naive and unschooled in the ways of the world. If the player character is male, he may have a romance with Jaheira. She can be found at the start of the game alongside the player.
Jan Jack Roth Gnome Thief/Illusionist Chaotic Neutral Like most gnomes, Jan Jansen is very eccentric, and tends to ramble on with stories that never get to the point. He is encountered while peddling his wares, which in actuality are dangerous weapons in their own right. His own weapon, a special crossbow entitled the "Flasher Master Bruiser" is so complicated that only he can use it, as are most of Jan's custom items.
Yoshimo Maurice LaMarche Human Bounty Hunter True Neutral The player first meets Yoshimo in Irenicus' dungeon shortly after passing through the first portal. Yoshimo is a charming, but sly and shifty character. If Yoshimo is taken to Spellhold along with the party it is revealed that he was working alongside Irenicus to trap the party and was forced to with a geas. Before his death he asks the protagonist to take his heart to a priest of Ilmater so that he might be redeemed for his dishonor. He is from Kara-Tur.

Evil

Name Voice actor Race Class Alignment Description
Edwin Jim Meskimen Human Conjurer Lawful Evil Since the first game, Edwin Odesseiron has found a new employer amongst the Shadow Thieves, though he still seeks more power for himself. Edwin indicates that he has become a rogue wizard, and is no longer held in esteem by Thay. Edwin has a side-quest which requires entering a the Graveyard District tombs and challenging an apparently deranged Lich. After the Lich is destroyed, Edwin will recover a powerful and ancient artifact called the Nether Scroll, which he will then spend some time deciphering. Casting the spell inscribed upon the scroll changes him into a woman, which results in teasing from the other party members. This then leads to an encounter with Thayan wizards who reveal that Edwin is now an exile. Edwin then returns to normal and the party is attacked by a Thayan. In the epilogue of Throne of Bhaal, it is implied that he was permanently transformed into a female by Elminster.
Korgan Bill Martin Dwarf Berserker Chaotic Evil Korgan Bloodaxe is an aggressive mercenary who frequently displays hostilities towards others and refuses to talk about himself. He initially joins the player character to get help with obtaining a book.
Sarevok Kevin Michael Richardson Human Fighter Chaotic Evil Sarevok Anchev is the main character's half-brother, who appears as a ghost near the beginning of the content of Throne of Bhaal. He helps the player character exit the Pocket Plane once he receives a piece of the soul of either the player character or Imoen, thereby bringing him back to life. After showing the player character the way out, he offers his services. Although his previous death has stripped him of all of his Bhaalspawn powers, he still remains a formidable melee fighter. The player can change Sarevok's alignment to Chaotic Good by setting a good example, and forgiving Sarevok for his past transgressions.
Viconia Grey DeLisle Drow Elf Cleric Neutral Evil Viconia DeVir is on the run from persecution because of her race. She is caught by fanatics of Athkatla in the government district after blowing her cover as a Drow, a sworn enemy of the humans in Amn. She survives if the player character rescues her from a mob attempting to burn her at the stake. If the player character is male and of any race other than an elf, he may have a romance with Viconia. In Throne of Bhaal this can change her alignment to True Neutral.

Recurring Baldur's Gate party members

Several characters from the first game make a comeback, some of which as NPCs that can join the player's party. Other NPCs appear only in smaller roles, mostly to supply the player with quests. Because Baldur's Gate II does not check the status of these characters at the end of the first game, they appear even if they perished in the course of the previous adventure.

Pre-Generated Baldur's Gate Characters

Baldur's Gate includes five pre-generated characters that can be used as playable main characters, or can be used as party NPC's in the multi-player version of the game. They can be accessed using the "Import" command in the player generation screen at the beginning of a new game. The player only needs provide them with a name to begin playing.

There are four pre-generated characters in Baldur's Gate II usable in the same manner as those in Baldur's Gate. Unlike the first game these character have names provided for them.
