The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (Kannada: ಭಾರತೀಯ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಾಪ್ರಬಂಧ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು, Hindi: भारतीय प्रबंधन संस्थान, बेंगलूरु, IIMB) is a business school located in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. It was established in 1973 by the Government of India, and is the third Indian Institute of Management (IIM) to be established, after IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad.[1]It offers several Post Graduate and Doctoral programmes, as well as a bouquet of Executive training programmes. IIM Bangalore awards only diplomas, and not degrees. In addition to its main academic programmes, IIM-B is also engaged in Research, Consultancy, seminars, academic conferences and research publications.
IIM Bangalore's MBA programme admissions are generally based on scores in the Common Admission Test, considered to be one of the toughest competitive exams in the world,[2][3] as well as on general candidate profiles and personal interviews.

In 1972, a committee headed by Prof Ravi Mathai, seeing the rising demand for graduates of the first two IIMs namely IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad, recommended the need to have two more IIMs. It was, therefore, felt that the institute to be set up in Bangalore should be developed in such a manner as to prepare competent persons for fulfilling the needs of the public sector. The institutions that were kept in mind were bodies like electricity boards, water supply boards and HMT, ITI, BEML, road transport, corporations, municipal corporations, and the like. The Institute at Bangalore was consequently set up that year, designed to cater exclusively to the needs of Public Sector enterprises.[4] For the proposed Bangalore institute, the Government of Karnataka offered 100 acres of land free of cost and a contribution to the corpus of Rs. 30 lakhs. Mr T A Pai agreed to be the first chairman. N S Ramaswamy, who was then director of National Institute of Industrial Engineering, was appointed the first director. Considerable preliminary work was done, and the new institute was inaugurated by Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, on 28 October 1973.The institute was started in St. Joseph's College of Commerce, and some other buildings, which were rented.
The current campus located at Bannerghatta road in Bengaluru was designed by architect B V Doshi and was completed in 1983.[5]

Further, the Executive Education Programme (EEP) caters to a wide variety of organizations in government, the public and private sectors and non-governmental organizations, with open and customized programmes ranging from two days to one year. The International Masters Program in Practising Management (IMPM), an international collaborative executive education program jointly offered by IIMB with INSEAD, McGill University, Lancaster University and a consortium of Japanese universities is globally recognised as a major innovation in executive education. The N.S. Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL) at IIMB also offers courses for entrepreneurs and owners of family businesses.[8]
The first step in admission to the PGP is through the Common Admission Test (CAT). This is followed by an interview and group discussions.[9]

IIMB was ranked first by the Business Today 50 best business schools of 2011[10] and second by the Hindustan Times India's top 50 business schools of 2011[11] and by the 2011 edition of CNBC-TV18's The A List of B-Schools.[12]
Research in IIM Bangalore is performed in research centers focusing on different aspects of managements. These include the ERP Research Centre, Centre for Insurance Research and Education, N S Raghavan Centre for Enterpreneurial Learning, Centre for Public Policy, Centre for Software & Information Technology Management, Centre for Development of Cases and Teaching Aids, Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship, Centre for Capital Market & Risk Management, Centre for Financial Markets and Institutions and the Supply Chain Management Centre.[13]
The campus was the site for the shooting of the Bollywood film Three Idiots directed by Rajkumar Hiranii and starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. The film is loosely based on the famous novel Five Point Someone by Indian writer IIT Delhi alumnus Chetan Bhagat.[15]
