Hurstville railway station is a major station on Australia's CityRail suburban Illawarra and interurban South Coast Line. It is located in the southern suburb of Hurstville, serving a residential and large commercial district. The station marks the end of the four track section from Illawarra Junction at Redfern; the line continues as two tracks south from this point. Several sidings to the south of the station allow stabling of passenger trains during off-peak periods.

Hurstville station is covered almost over its entire length by the Hurstville Central (formerly Hurstville Supercentre) shopping centre, one of the first suburban stations in Sydney to receive such treatment of its overhead airspace. Access to the station is now through this mall, which was refurbished in 2007-8. The station is arranged as two island platforms and is served by both stairs and lifts. Hurstville was one of the first suburban stations to receive LED passenger information boards on the platforms in the early 1990s, these have now been replaced by standard LCD screens. Located nearby is Westfield Hurstville, bus interchanges (serviced by Sydney Buses, Punchbowl Buses and Veolia NSW) and a significant enclave of office towers. A second entrance to the station is currently being constructed further south along Forest Road to connect to a proposed bus interchange in Woodville Road.[1]

History

The Illawarra line opened through Hurstville in 1884.[2] Electrification to Oatley occurred in the 1920s and this was the first section of electrified line in Sydney. In 1965, the Supercentre shopping mall was built above the platforms, the original station buildings survived underneath until demolished during refurbishment in the early 1990s. The Supercentre became quite run down over the years before redevelopment into the present 'Hurstville Central' shopping centre in the late 2000s. New stores opened in the centre including Coles, a seafood store and butcher, a Chinese supermarket and an internet cafe. Stores that had been in the former Supercentre (for example Duffy Bros) have re-opened. There have previously been plans to build several residential towers above the station[3] but these plans have been shelved over concerns about the integrity of overhead supports in the event of a derailment.[4]

In 1920 five people were killed when two trains collided while one was shunting at the station. [5]

Platforms and services

All scheduled passenger services that pass through Hurstville stop there. It is also the main terminating point for local all-stations services that operate to Bondi Junction on weekdays.

Basic service consists of six suburban trains per hour in each direction, with four proceeding to and from Cronulla and two proceeding to and from Waterfall. In addition one to two South Coast Interurban/Intercity services per hour operate in each direction. Service frequency increases during peak periods, with up to 18 services an hour operating towards the city in the morning peak. [6]

The station is served by six to eight trains per hour each way, with additional trains during weekday peak hours.
