Hubert Österle (*born 24 July 1949, in Dornbirn, Austria) [1]is a Professor of Information Management,[2] the Director of the Institute of Information Management [3] at the University of St. Gallen, and a co-founder of the Information Management Group (IMG AG).

Hubert Österle studied Business Administration at the University of Innsbruck and the Johannes Keppler Universität Linz. After that he was a research assistant at the Chair of Peter Mertens at the Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, where he received his Ph.D. in 1973[4].
After his employment at IBM Germany GmbH, in 1980 Österle was promoted to professor at the Universität Dortmund at the Chair of Joachim Griese with a postdoctoral dissertation on the „Design of information systems“.
Since 1980 Österle has been teaching information management at the University of St. Gallen. In 1989 he founded the Institute of Information Management (IWI-HSG)[5] at the University of St. Gallen within the University of St. Gallen. In 1997 he initiated the executive MBA „Master of Business Engineering“ program at the University of St. Gallen[6].
Besides his academic achievements, Österle founded the consultancy company The Information Management Group (IMG AG, since 2007 a member of the S&T Group)[7] in 1989 and the Business Engineering Institute St. Gallen AG [8] (until 2011 DMI, Direct Management Institute St. Gallen) in 2003. Österle is the chief editor of the international journal „Electronic Markets“ and a member of the editorial boards of several other journals)[9].
