- Hu (surname), a Chinese family name represented by the character 胡
- Chin-lung Hu (born 1984), Major League Baseball shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hu is the fifth MLB player, and the first MLB infielder, from Taiwan. He has the shortest surname for a player in Major League history
- Hu Hesheng (born 1928), renowned female mathematician. She is the former vice-president of Chinese Mathematical Society, the former president of Shanghai Mathematical Society, and an academician of Chinese Academy of Science . She held the Noether Lecture in 2002
- Hu Yaobang (1915–1989), leader of the People's Republic of China who supported economic and political reforms. In 1987, socialist hardliners forced him to resign for his "laxness" on "bourgeois liberalization" and he was humiliated with "self-criticism"
- Hu Haichang (born 1928), notable Chinese mechanical and astronautic engineer. He was in charge of the early phase development for Dong Fang Hong I, which is the first artificial satellite of China. Hu is also a senior academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)
