It grows in tufts from 10 to 40 centimetres in height. It is an annual.[3][4]
It was first published at species rank as Hordeum leporinum by Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link in 1834. In 1882 it was demoted to a subspecies of H. murinum by Giovanni Arcangeli. Nonetheless some herbaria maintain it at species rank.[3][4]
It is native to Europe, northern Africa and temperate Asia; and is widely naturalised elsewhere.[2]
