Hivos

Hivos (Humanist Institute for Cooperation in full, Dutch: Humanistisch Instituut voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking) is a Dutch organization for development co-inspired by humanist values. Hivos provides financial and political support to over 800 partner organizations in over 30 countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Southeastern Europe. Along with these local organizations, Hivos seeks to contribute to a free, fair and sustainable world, where women and men have equal access to resources and opportunities for development. Hivos is convinced that if people have a fair chance, their possibilities are almost limitless. Hence the slogan of Hivos' No limits to people "(" people unlimited "). An important guiding principle is to strengthen the social position of women.

History

Hivos Foundation was founded in 1968 by the Humanist Association, the Association and Humanitas Weezenkas response to the dominance of religious organizations in the Dutch landscape development.

Organization

End of 2006, Hivos total of 160 employees, of whom about 100 at its headquarters in The Hague and more than 50 at the regional offices in Jakarta (Indonesia), San Jose (Costa Rica), Harare (Zimbabwe) and Bangalore (India) were employed .

The Executive Board of Hivos is owned by the statutory board, namely Manuela Monteiro (Managing Director) and Allert van den Ham (director of programs and projects). The management also comprises the four heads of program offices and the Agency Assessment and Control Evaluation. The four directors of the regional offices do - remotely - are part of management. Above the board is a supervisory board, the supervisor may also call upon the Board of Advisors.

Hivos consists of four agencies that implement the two programs: Sustainable Economic Development, Democracy, Rights, AIDS and Gender, Culture, Media and ICT, and External Relations. The latter agency is responsible for communication, lobbying and European networks, as well as fundraising and marketing in the Netherlands. Monitor the proper utilization of project funds, the operation and use of project administration and administrative organization as a whole are the responsibility of the Agency Assessment, Evaluation and Control (TEC). Also develops and monitors the agency's monitoring and evaluation policy.

The Office for Donor Relations (ODR) is responsible for improving access to (private) institutional funds. DDR supports sector teams and regional offices in fundraising and coordinates fundraising outside financing system in the Netherlands.

Humanistic values

The humanist philosophy is central to the policy of Hivos. Humanism, the human heart and is based on the value of the man himself. Key elements of humanism - and the Hivos policy - are: human dignity and empowerment, aversion to dogmatism and authoritarian regimes, pluralism and democracy, solidarity, responsible citizenship and respect for cultural and social identity.

Method

Hivos supports more than 800 local private organizations in over 30 countries. Hivos provides financial partners in these resources, expertise, advice and political support. In addition, Hivos undertake self advocacy, both in the international arena in the Netherlands. Community building and sustainable economic production are the central policy of Hivos. Part of the program is run from offices in Zimbabwe, India, Costa Rica and Indonesia. They provide a significant proportion of contacts with partner organizations, such as advice and guidance.

Hivos strengthens local organizations with capital, knowledge and contacts. Hivos enter yourself in Dutch, European and global player in the lobby and as local civil society (through regional offices). Hivos also encourages building, sharing and applying knowledge for development. As a participant in a coalition and as a broker contacts, Hivos is part of a large number of networks.

Themes

Hivos focuses on poverty reduction, community building and advocacy, and does this in the following seven thematic areas:

The various campaigns Hivos are generally divided into those themes. The organization is also committed to the Millennium Development Goals established by the United Nations. Hivos also participates the cooperation for Yogyakarta Principles in Action movement for LGBTI people.[1]

Campaigns

In his lobbying activities in the Netherlands and Europe from Hivos for topics that are related to the work of partner organizations in the South and on the basis of the objectives of Hivos within a given sector. In the Netherlands, Hivos, the following campaigns:

Stop Child Labour - the best school workshop

As part of the European campaign against child labor in the Netherlands, Hivos works with the General Education Association, FNV and the India Committee. The aim is to force governments to move to a policy aimed at total abolition of child labor, increasing their level of support and public involvement with the topic. One example is the role of the Foundation for Children's Stamps (SKN), the program against child from MV Foundation in India in 2007 and supports a tour of this organization in Latin America funds.

Virus Free Generation

Virus Free Generation campaign aimed at combating HIV and AIDS by seeking to improve prevention and access to medicines. In the Netherlands the campaign in December 2006 launched an ambitious multimedia show. Four hundred young people competed in a creative competition for the Virus Free Award. Since launching new events and actions are being organized. Through the website, young people including www.virusfreegeneration.nl Alliance2015 with partners in Southern Africa are in contact.

Coffee Campaign

On the coffee campaign Hivos takes part as a member of the Coffee Coalition. Odds are fairer prices and better social conditions for coffee workers. Research shows that 25% of the coffee in the Netherlands today is from a certified producer. Partly due to the Coffee Coalition, one in four Dutch drink coffee so satisfying social and environmental standards.

Small social activities (Linkis)

Linkis is a joint operation of Dutch co-financing organizations in the field of international cooperation. Hivos also supports private initiatives that promote development in the South through the Linkis program and contribute to strengthening the support for international cooperation. The interest of individuals to own hands dirty to stabbing was also increased in 2006 and the trend of the increasing number of applications continues. Collaboration

Hivos is working with numerous NGOs and other civil society organizations, businesses and governments in the Netherlands, Europe and the South. Complementarity - in expertise, fields and roles - and joining of forces are crucial in achieving the goals. In the European context Hivos works actively with like-minded development organizations in Alliance2015. Hivos International lobby operates preferably on recognizable themes and in close cooperation with leading international partner organizations, or Southern, or in the context of the Eurostep network.

In the Netherlands, Hivos joins forces with civil society organizations expert in one of the policy spearheads. In addition, Hivos, together with related organizations within the trade association Partos.

Credits

Hivos is a private organization with a social objective which a public function. The Dutch public (especially the humanist supporters), the government, other funders and partners and partner organizations in the South are the main stakeholders. Hivos ISO certified and has the CBF certification.
