Historical bus routes in Basingstoke

The town of Basingstoke in Hampshire, England, has a large bus network, providing the main public transport service there. Most services are currently run by Stagecoach in Hampshire. The network has a long history, and some routes are particularly long-standing.[1]

This is a list of some bus routes that have served Basingstoke in past years.

Unless otherwise indicated, services are provided by Hants & Dorset, a part of National Bus. The list is not strictly in numerical order, as (confusingly) the routes on many town services at the time were made up of two different numbers, depending on the direction of travel.

November 1983

Unless otherwise indicated, services are provided by Hampshire Bus, a part of National Bus.

No further details on rural routes at this time are available at present.

June 1990

Unless otherwise indicated, services are provided by Stagecoach Hampshire Bus. The network and the numbering scheme for the routes, similar to that listed for 1983 was recast with this timetable. This was the biggest change to the network until the 2000 changes. The 1990 change was bought in at the same time as the new one way system came into operation in the town centre.

Routes 41 and 42 combined to provide a 15 minute service between Basingstoke Bus Station and Lychpit during daytimes.

Journeys on routes 50 and 50 start/finish as route 56 via Buckskin at Kempshott Sainsburys.

September 1994

Evening and Sunday Running Sequence

This would have been used from the 1996 timetable, up to August 2000. After November 1998 service 50 journeys would have been referred to as service 41. After February 1999 evening journeys were on this route were renumbered 41A. It took six buses to run the evening service.

This was the first version of the network Basingstoke sees today. The 1999 service was directly replaced by this one in August 2000. It took a very long time for Basingstoke's travellers to get used to the new network, it was vastly different from the previous one.

The following services did not serve the Bus Station, using the railway station instead: 1, 3, 6
