Hindu Jat clans of Ambala Division

Below is a list of Hindu Jat clans and their population in the Ambala Division of Punjab, drawn up for 1911 Census of India. This region now forms part of the modern state of Haryana in India. In 1911, the Ambala Division consisted of four districts, Ambala, Hissar, Rohtak, and Gurgaon.[1] Delhi has been included, although in 1911 it was separated from Punjab and became a province in its own right, but at the time of the carrying out the 1911 census (late 1910), it was still in Punjab.

The appearance of a particular tribe as Jat in the list does not in itself confirm that the tribe is Jat or otherwise. Identity may change with time, and some groups in the list may no longer identify themselves as Jats. This list simply gives an historical distribution of Hindu Jat tribes in the historic British colonial province of Punjab, a number of years prior to the partition of Punjab. [2]

Ambala District

The total Jat population of the district, according to the 1931 Census of India, was 106,402, of which the Hindu Jat population was 20,518 or 19%. According to the 1911 census, the following were the principal Jat clans:[3]

Hissar District

The total Jat population of the district, according to the 1931 Census of India, was 224,889, of which the Hindu Jat population was 185,940 or 83% of the total. According to the 1911 census, the following were the principal Jat clans:[4]

Rohtak District
