Herbert Edward Stacy Abbott (born November 19, 1814) was a Major-General in the British Indian Army in India during colonial rule.

Abbott attended Addiscombe Military Academy from 1829-1831.[1]
He wrote an account of the Indian Mutiny that was not intended for public circulation at the time entitled "Particulars of the mutiny at Delhi, on the 11 May, 1857".[2]
About 1886 Abbott designed the Ellerslie building in Shimla which is the home of the Himachal Pradesh Secretariat.[3]

He married Sarah Masson. He was the son of George Edward Abbott (died 1822) and Ann (or Anna) Maria Stacy, who married in India. George Edward Abbott was the Head Assistant in the Calcutta General Post Office.[4] Ann Maria was the daughter of the Reverend Henry Peter Stacy (born c1760) who was believed to have been chaplain at Danapoor.[5] An image of Reverend HP Stacy is in the Manchester Art Gallery.[6] HES Abbott's sister Marianne Sarah Abbott (1808–1887) married Charles Scott Hadow.
His son, Herbert Abbott (1855–1939) was a keen cricketer, playing for the Marylebone Cricket Club.[7]
