Herad is a former municipality in Vest-Agder county in Norway. It is located in the northeastern part of the present-day municipality of Farsund.

Name

The municipality (originally the parish) was named Herred (Old Norse: Herað) which means "village" or "hamlet". The spelling of the name was changed to Herad in the 19th century.[1][2]

History

The parish of Herod (later Herred) was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). On 17 October 1893, the district of Spind was separated from Herad to create a municipality of its own. The split left Herad with 1,019 inhabitants.

On 1 January 1965, Herad (population: 359) was merged together with Spind, Lista, and the town of Farsund to form a the municipality of Farsund.[3]
