Hemelum (West Frisian: Himmelum is a small village in Súdwest Fryslân, in the province Friesland of the Netherlands. A 2002 census reported approximately 589 citizens (2002).

History

Convent

The first information about Hemelum is from 1180. Hemelum had a stins, some states and a convent. The nunnery of Benedictine Order was one of the first convents at Friesland. outside nuns lived at the convent also Beguines. The convent was dependent on the Abbot of Stavorum. In the Middle Ages lived in Hemelum The noble families Epema and Galama.

Russian Orthodox

The Dutch Reformed Church of Hemelum is In 1668 built on the foundations of the old convent church. This convent tradition has at the end of the 20th century received a continuationwhen in the village a conventof the Russian Orthodox church was established.

Farmers

The Most people in and around Hemelum used to be farmers. In 1896 was by the farmers the steam Dairy factory Coöperatieve Stoomzuivelfabriek Hemelum founded, an important source of employment for the village. Since 1974, the building used as a water sports company (including a sailing school). In and around the village came more tourism companies, including a bungalow parc.

Gemeentelijke Herindeling

to the Municipal amalgamation in 1984 was Hemelum in the former municipality Hemelumer Aldeferd, witch Koudum as capital. until 2011 was Hemelum in the municipality Nijefurd witch Workum as capital.
