Hellsau is a municipality in the district of Burgdorf, in the canton of Bern, Switzerland.

History

Hellsau is first mentioned in 1275 as Hellesowe.[3]

Geography

Häutligen has an area, as of 2009, of 3.07 km2 (1.19 sq mi). Of this area, 2.09 km2 (0.81 sq mi) or 68.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.84 km2 (0.32 sq mi) or 27.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.11 km2 (27 acres) or 3.6% is settled (buildings or roads).[4]

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 2.0% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.6%. 27.4% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 45.9% is used for growing crops and 18.9% is pastures, while 3.3% is used for orchards or vine crops.[4]

The village of Hellsau includes the village with Halde and the hamlets of Freienhof and Moos. Hellsau belongs to the parish of Koppigen.

Demographics

Hellsau has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 193.[1] As of 2007, 1.7% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 3.4%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (97.9%), with French being second most common ( 0.5%) and Dutch being third ( 0.5%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 75.1% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (9.4%), the FDP (5%) and the Green Party (3.8%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 32.1% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 58% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 9.8%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Hellsau about 82.5% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Hellsau has an unemployment rate of 0.25%. As of 2005, there were 21 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 5 businesses involved in this sector. 81 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 4 businesses in this sector. 21 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 4 businesses in this sector.[5]
