Irnham is a village in Lincolnshire in South Kesteven, Lincolnshire, England. It is about ten miles south east of Grantham, To the north is Osgodby, to the south Swinstead, and to the west Corby Glen. The village is on a high limestone ridge that forms the southern part of the Lincolnshire Wolds.

The civil parish of Irnham also includes the hamlets of Bulby and Hawthorpe. The similar ecclesiastical parish is Irnham, part of the Beltisloe rural deanery, Diocese of Lincoln. The parish is part of a group which also includes Corby Glen and Swayfield, sharing the benefit of a single priest. The parish church is dedicated to St. Andrew.

History

The village is famous as the former home of the Luttrell Psalter.[1][2]

Irnham Hall

Irnham Hall was the ancient seat of the Paynells and then from about 1200, the Luttrell family, Lords of Irnham until 1418. The Manor then passed by marriage to the Hilton family and similarly in 1510 to the Thimelby family, by whom the present Tudor house was built in about 1600.[3]

In 1853 the Hall was sold to Woodhouse and had several owners until bought by the present owners the Benton Jones family in 1901.

Thimblesby's Almshouses

The village almshouses built in 1712 are still in use.[4]

St Andrew's Church

St Andrews Church is famous for the tomb and Easter Sepulchre of Geoffrey Luttrell, who commissioned the Luttrell Psalter in the early 14th century. It is late Norman, with Perpendicular additions. It was heavily restored in 1858, and again in 2006.[5]

Businesses

The village public house is the Griffin Inn on Bulby Road. Most other employment is in farming.
