The headteacher is Mrs Jan Hatherall. It is an oversubscribed school. The School was given academy status in September 2010[1].

Chippenham Grammar School existed on the site from 1939, which was co-educational until Chippenham High School for Girls opened on 28 September 1956. From 1966, education was shared with adjacent schools, as a semi-comprehensive arrangement.
In 1975 it became the fully comprehensive Hardenhuish School, when both boys' and girls' schools were merged. It became a specialist Maths & Computing College in February 2003, and a Science College in April 2009.
Hardenhuish received the tenth highest A-level average results for comprehensives in Wiltshire at the end of the 2009/2010 school year[2]. It has received many awards over recent years including: Maths and computing specialist, Science specialist, The ICT mark, Gifted and talented lead school and The International schools award. In the 2008 the school was reviewed by Ofsted as being 'Outstanding'[3]. In September 2010 Hardenhuish decided to become a "Gove Academy", which means that it is outside of Local Authority control or responsibility.
