Hadaftimo was previously a part of Maakhir state. In January 2009, the territory was officially incorporated into the autonomous Puntland region in the northeastern part of the country.[1]
Local control is disputed between Puntland, Somaliland, a self-declared independent republic that is internationally recognized as an autonomous region of Somalia, and HBM-SSC (Hoggaanka Badbaadada iyo Mideynta SSC), a local unionist group whose goal is the creation of its own regional administration (Sool, Sanaag and Cayn or SSC).[2]
In 1989, in the events leading up to the eventual civil war that broke out two years later, guerillas from the Somali National Movement junta are reputed to have laid siege on the town. The rebels were subsequently repelled by a joint effort by local residents and the Somali National Army (SNA).
In 1993, a grand meeting was held between the town's traditional elders and the former Sultan Abdisalam. The conference ended in a declaration re-affirming the unity of Somalia, and the refusal of Somalis from the Warsangali Darod clan to recognize any other administrative entity.
Hadaftimo is the seat of the current Sultan of Warsangali, Sultan Saed Sultan Abdisalam, a lineal descendant of Sultan Mohamoud Ali Shire of the Warsangali Sultanate.
The town is situated near the city of Badhan, at a distance of approximately 30 km. For this reason, the two localities are sometimes referred to as Twin Cities.
