Hackham West is an outer southern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the City of Onkaparinga.

History

The suburb has existed for about thirty years. Prior to this, the area was rural with vineyards and farms.

Geography

Hackham West lies between the Southern Expressway and Main South Road to the west and east, respectively. To the north, the suburb is bounded by Beach Road and Honeypot Road forms its southern boundary.[7]

Demographics

The 2006 Census by the Australian Bureau of Statistics counted 3,763 persons in Hackham West on census night. Of these, 49.1% were male and 50.9% were female.[1]

The majority of residents (74.3%) are of Australian birth, with another common census response being England (9.2%).[1]

The age distribution of Hackham West residents is similar to that of the greater Australian population. 63.3% of residents were over 25 years in 2006, compared to the Australian average of 66.5%; and 36.7% were younger than 25 years, compared to the Australian average of 33.5%.[1]

Politics

Local government

Hackham West is part of Mid South Coast Ward in the City of Onkaparinga local government area,[4] being represented in that council by William Jamieson, Chris Knight and Kym Richardson.[8]

State and federal

Hackham West lies in the state electoral district of Mawson[5] and the federal electoral division of Kingston.[6] The suburb is represented in the South Australian House of Assembly by Leon Bignell[5] and federally by Amanda Rishworth.[6]

Community

The local newspaper is the Southern Times Messenger. Other regional and national newspapers such as The Advertiser and The Australian are also available.[9]

Schools

Hackham West Primary School is located on Warsaw Crescent.[10]

Facilities and attractions

Parks

Several parks and other greenspace intersperse the suburb. The largest reserve lies between Warsaw Crescent, Oslo Crescent and Amsterdam Road. Several of the parks are equipped with playground equipment and some offer picnic facilities.[7]

Roads

Hackham West is serviced by MainSouth Road, connecting the suburb to the north and south of metropolitan Adelaide, and by Beach and Honeypot roads, which form its northern and southern boundaries respectively.[7]

Public transport

Hackham West is serviced by public transport run by the Adelaide Metro.[11]

Bicycle routes

A bicycle path extends north-south through the centre of the suburb. There is also a bicycle path running beside the Southern Expressway.[7]
