Gregory Edgelow
Greg Edgelow (born February 10) has lived his entire life but one year in BC, has First Nations heritage (Cree), is a retired freestyle wrestler from Canada and is a nationally certified Wrestling Coach and Aboriginal Coach trained. He represented Canada at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Edgelow won a bronze medal at the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle, two bronze medals at the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba and a gold medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria. Greg is an eight-time Canadian senior champion (7 Freestyle & 1 Greco), as well as a juvenile, junior and national university champion. In the history of the Goodwill Games, Greg is the only Canadian to win a medal in the sport of wrestling (bronze) which occurred in 1990 in Seattle. Greg is the only Canadian wrestler to win 4 separate consecutive senior weight classes in Freestyle (82 kg, 90 kg, 96 kg, 100 kg). His last national title was in 1998 where he represented Canada at the World Championships [1] in Tehran, Iran. Greg was awarded the 1999 Canadian Sport Leadership Award for his outstanding athletic achievements and leadership in volunteerism, where he beat out fellow finalists Wayne Gretzky and downhill skier Brian Stemmle. Greg created Canada's only amateur wrestling radio show called the Wrestling Edge Radio Show heard Monday nights at 6pm PST at www.blogtalkradio.com/wrestlingedgeradio where he has interviewed over 150 guests including some of the most prolific wrestlers in history as well as some top MMA athletes. Since 1986 Greg has travelled to six continents and 59 countries around the world for sport, business and pleasure.
Greg grew up in first in Penticton and then Vernon, BC and has lived in Vancouver since 1982 and was recently working as an Executive Director in Whitehorse, Yukon working in the field of Aboriginal Sport & Recreation. Greg has been involved in the Canadian sport, tourism and entertainment community where he has participated on 11 Boards of Directors, including 48 committees over the past 18 years.[1] Greg's experiences has allowed him to develop and participate on 9 Adjudication Committees in which he has Chaired 5 and helped adjudicate small grants totalling almost $4 Million dollars for sport infrastructure development to needy communities across the country and almost $1 Million dollars in grants to top performing, volunteer driven, world calibre athletes representing Canada. Greg was the motivational speaker at the Parade of Nations for the 1997 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) and member of Team BC Mission Staff at NAIG 2006 and Assistant Chef de Mission at NAIG 2008. Greg helps out on occasion with the wrestling clubs around Greater Vancouver as well as local high school teams. Greg and his father, Les Edgelow created an endowed scholarship fund at Simon Fraser University in 1996 that is currently worth over $22,000 that has financially assisted over 12 university wrestlers since its creation.[2]
