Greeley Avenue is a residential yet important east-west avenue in the Grant City and Midland Beach neighborhoods of New York City, in the borough of Staten Island, New York.[1]
Like many parallel streets in the area, it begins at Richmond Road, and then travels southeast for a few quiet residential blocks before stopping at the Staten Island Railway's ROW near the southern entrance of its Grant City station at 0.20 miles (0.32 km). Greeley Avenue continues onward for more quiet blocks until reaching Hylan Boulevard at 0.60 miles (0.97 km). Both of these sections of Greeley Avenue are a one way towards the Staten Island Railway.[1]
The third leg of Greeley Avenue is its most traveled. A two-way in for the rest of its length, this section begins at Hylan Boulevard and continues on to Father Capodanno Boulevard at 1.40 miles (2.25 km).[1] Having not one stop sign or signal for its entire route, this leg of Greeley Avenue is a known for speeding vehicles. In 2005 and 2006 the New York City Department of Transportation installed electronic speed-display signage along the leg.[2]
Landmarks include the St. Margaret Mary convent, located at 555 Greeley Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10306. In 2010 the structure was almost converted into an Islamic mosque and cultural center until parishioners of St. Margaret Mary's Church protested the sale of this property.[3][4]
