It occurs in tall emergent vegetation in or bordering freshwater swamps or along banks of rivers in the lowlands of Bangladesh, northern India, Myanmar and the Chitwan National Park of Nepal. It is threatened by habitat loss and already extinct in Thailand and Vietnam.[1]
The Sukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve in Nepal represents the western limit of its distribution.[2]
According to the research led by Paul Leader, the population occurring in Hong Kong and south China should be treated as a separate species, Chinese Grassbird (Graminicola striatus). Initial estimates suggest that there are no more than 50-100 pairs in Hong Kong – giving a maximum known global population of just 200 birds.[3]
