Gorgage

Gorgage (alternate: Gorgij) is one of prominent Baloch tribes mainly dwelling in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is one of the most powerful Baloch tribes in Sistan, Zahedan and Afghan Balochistan.

They were the first inhabitants of Dera Bugti (the district of East Balochistan). After many battles with other tribes they migrated to other parts of Balochistan, but first Sardar Balach Gorgage grave is in Dera Bugti. For a long time the Gorgage chieftain was settled in the Afghan part of Balochistan but recently, owing to the spread of the Gorgage population, and also owing to borders which have separated the Baloch people into three neighboring countries (Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan), three tribal chieftains have emerged. Two of them belong to Irani Balochistan, and one in Eastern Balochistan.

In Pakistan, the Gorgage Tribe's chief, Sardar Muhammad Umar Gorgage, is a prominent and well known political leader and member of the National Assembly. Sardar Muhammad Umar Gorgage began his political career in 1990 in the Jamhoori Wattan Party. Sardar Umar Gorgage was one of the close friend of Nawab Akber Khan Bugti, and in 1998 he became district chairman of Chagai for six months after a government change. In 2007 when Jamhoori Wattan Party was divided in three parts, he resigned and joined the Pakistan Peoples Party and took part in the 2008 election.
