Plot

The episode starts with Tom Rhumor (Harris Yulin), a wealthy old man, reading newspapers. Suddenly, he notices a four-leaf clover on one of the newspapers. After looking out the window to his wife Katherine (Miranda Richardson), he goes to the library and commits suicide.

At the American Policy Institute (API), Will Travers (James Badge Dale) finds code hidden in several newspaper crossword puzzles. He gives this information to his boss David Hadas (Peter Gerety), but David waves this off as just an inside joke. However, David later gives the same information to Kale Ingram (Arliss Howard), who tells David that it's a "good catch".

It is later revealed that David is Will's father-in-law. Will's wife and daughter died on 9/11 because they were on top of the World Trade Center that morning when the attacks started.

For Will's birthday, David gives him a book and a letter, but he tells Will to open the letter only when Will gets home. At home, Will finds out that the letter contains a key to a Norton motorcycle. The letter/note says, "DRIVE AWAY. DON'T LOOK BACK. IT'S TIME." He calls David and tells him that he cannot accept this gift. David says that he will explain it to him the next morning. However, before he has the chance to do this, he is killed in a train crash.

While Will is going through David's office, he gets a call from a mysterious man saying "Knight to king's bishop three". After some investigation, Will finds out that the caller is Ed Bancroft (Roger Robinson), a retired code breaker. He visits Ed to tell him about David. Will is also suspicious about the circumstances of David's death. Among other things, he finds David's car parked in a space numbered "13", something that Will believes David would never do because he was very superstitious.

Although Will briefly considers quitting his job, he is finally persuaded otherwise and instead is promoted to replace David. Meanwhile, Truxton Spangler (Michael Cristofer), director of API, goes to a meeting and demands assurance that Tom Rhumor is dead. One of the men in the room assures him that Tom's dead.
