History

Goghtn region was a part of Armenia since the 6th century BC.[2] According to Movses Khorenatsi, the king of Armenia, Tigran Ervanduni, settled his wife and his female offspring girls in an area to the east of (Ararat) and up to Goghtn, in Tambat, Oskiokh, Djaghguyn and other settlements giving them also three towns - Khram, Jugha and Khoshakunik, and on the other bank of the river (Arax) all the field from Ajanakan up to the Nakhchavan Fortress.

According to Tovma Artsruni, Goghtn was a part of Armenian Vaspurakan Region till 737 AD.[3]

From the 890s it was a small Muslim statelet, centered on the town of Goght'n (which was probably either Ordubad or Agulis). Its Arab emirs were of the Shaybani tribe and were often in conflict with the neighbouring emirates of Nashawa (Nakhichevan) and Dabil (Dvin) and sometimes in alliance with the Armenian Bagratids.

At the beginning of the 17th century, due to the deportation organized by Shah Abbas I, the population of Goghtn, as well as many other towns and villages of Nakhichevan, were forced to leave their homeland.[4]
