Station overview

Facilities

Glenhuntly is located at the southern end of the Glen Huntly Road level crossing, with station access from Royal Avenue and Glen Huntly Road.

The station consists of an island layout and side platform; Platforms 1 & 2 (island platform) has a large brick building housing an enclosed waiting area, ticket facilities and toilets, while platform 3 has a small weatherboard building. A large Metcard ticket vending machine is located at the entrance to platform 1, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. Additional coin-only Metcard and myki ticket vending machines are located inside the waiting area, and at the entrance to platform 3.

Glenhuntly station is located next to a 'tram square', one of only four crossings in Melbourne at which tram and train tracks intersect along with their electrified overhead wires. A small signal box is situated at the Flinders Street end of the tram square which controls the tramway crossing. Trains run a mere 15 kilometres per hour (9.3 mph) through it due to the deteriorating condition of the crossing, with goods trains advised to cross slower.[1] In 2009 the tram square as well as the pit of the station was reconstructed.

History

Glenhuntly station opened on 19 December 1881 as Glen Huntly Road. It was renamed GlenHuntly in 1882, and Glenhuntly in 1937,[2] although the VICNAMES website has it listed as Glen Huntly.[3]
