Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology (Assamese: গিৰিজানন্দ চৌধুৰী ব্যৱস্থাপনা আৰু প্ৰযুক্তি প্ৰতিষ্ঠান)(commonly known as GIMT or sometimes GCIMT) is the first institute offering degree level technical course in the State of Assam in the non-government sector established by Shrimanta Shankar Academy (SSA) Society. The college is established with prior permission from the State Government and approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and is affiliated to Gauhati University.

According to SSA Society[2],

Observing the huge gap in need and facilities available in the remote north eastern part of the country, "Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology (GIMT)" was established in the year 2006 with a vision to produce competent, disciplined and quality engineers and administrators having the drive, skill and confidence to become the pioneers of tomorrow.

Affiliation

It is affiliated to Gauhati University, situated in Jalukbari, Guwahati, Assam. All the undergraduate Bachelor of Engineering courses are recognized by the AICTE.

Campus and geography

GIMT is located at Hathkhowapara or Noapara, Azara, Guwahati on the National Highway No.37 five km to the east of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and 16 km to the west of Guwahati Railway Station.

Hostels

Presently, there are limited Hostel facilities available for Girls and Boys near college campus, but construction of hostel is going on inside the premises. The outsider students manage their staying in private hostels and rent houses of the nearby places, such as Lankeshwar, Hathkhowapara, Godhuli Bazar, Dharapur, [Lankeshwar], Adabari Tiniali,the place of engineers etc.

Academic programs

GIMT is best known for its undergraduate program i.e. the Bachelor of Engineering program. It also offers postgraduate level programs like Master of Business Administration and Master of Computer Application. The admission criteria for all these programs is different at the entry level.

Undergraduate programs

GIMT offers 4 years Bachelor of Engineering course in 6 different major areas that include Computer Science and Engineering (60 seats), Information Technology (60 seats), Electrical Engineering (60 seats), Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (90 seats), Mechanical Engineering (90 seats) and Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering (60 seats). The admission to this program is done through Common Entrance Exam (CEE) and All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) organised by Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) respectively.

Post-graduate programs

GIMT offers postgraduate programs in Master of Business Administration (2 years) (60 seats) and Master of Computer Application (3 years)(60 seats). The admission to these programs is done through the entrance examination conducted by Gauhati University and other equivalent entrance examinations.

Departments

Each department focuses on their respective engineering or science discipline. To deal with the laboratory and practical components of the syllabi, the Institute has 23 numbers of full fledged departmental laboratories and workshop, equipped with the modern equipment and instruments. The students get complete hands on experience in these laboratories to equip themselves with the requisite professional expertise.[3]

Sports week

As part of extracurricular activities, a sports week is organised in January. Competition of cricket, football, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, carom, chess, cyber games, etc. are organised.

Annual festival

Every year the students and administration of GIMT organize a festival cum competition called Euphuism, usually in the last week of January. The sports and cultural events held during the festival help GIMTians to recharge their energies for carrying out academic activities with renewed vigour, once the festival is over.

The featured cultural events of the festival includes the "DJ Nite" and the "Prime Nite" where popular artists and bands perform to huge audiences. The other events include:

Games such as Eating Competition, Rangoli Making Competition, Antakshari, Blind Date, Tug of War, Balancing Competition etc. are organized just for fun.

Yuva-redefining dreams

GIMT launched a youth awareness campaign during the annual fest EUPHUISM 2010, called Yuva - Redefining Dreams, with the tagline "All we need is Youth and a Dream..."[5]

Uttaran

GIMT published the first edition of its wall magazine Uttaran in mid-2009. The first edition was bilingual in Assamese and English. From the second Edition (book)|edition, it was published separately in Assamese and English.

GIMT is planning to publish its annual college magazine from 2010.
