Gildan Activewear Inc. (TSX: GIL NYSE: GIL) Gildan is a clothing company which produces basic apparel and hosiery. The company's corporate head office is located in Montreal, Canada, and its manufacturing facilities are in Honduras, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, the USA and Bangladesh. It also outsources some sewing operations to 3rd party contractors in Haiti. Gildan shares are listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange. Gildan acquired the sock maker Gold Toe Moretz in 2011.
There have been many allegations of Gildan's anti-union activities. For example, The Dominican Federation of Free Trade Zone Workers (FEDOTRAZONAS) noted incidents of antiunion activity at Gildan Active Wear, Andin Caribe, Kola Real, and Loadway Enterprise. Complaints were made about the management, that they threatened to fire union members, tried to delay union membership and collective bargaining rights, and violated worker rights under the labor code.[2]
