Gesu School ( /dʒeɪˈzuː/) is a diverse Catholic elementary school in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Toledo. It is part of Gesu Parish, which is named after the original Church of the Gesù in Rome, which St. Ignatius Loyola began. It was originally founded by Jesuits, but it is now an Oblate parish.[4]
Gesu serves students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, who typically come from Ottawa Hills, Westmoreland, or Old Orchard neighborhoods across from the University of Toledo campus. It is a Roman Catholic school affiliated to the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). Gesu has 180 days of classes a year, and a typical school day is 6 hours long.[1] The school has 19 classrooms, all with internet access and Smart Boards.[2] Each grade has two classes, with an average of about 25 children each.

"Gesu is a diocesan Roman Catholic school sponsored by Gesu Parish. The Gesu community is committed to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, and social growth of each student. The staff believes that it is our role to assist parents, the primary educators, to create an atmosphere of academic excellence, based on values taught by Jesus Christ."[5]
In 1920, Bishop Schrembs assigned the boundaries of Gesu Parish in Toledo. The next year, the first classrooms of Gesu School were formed and administered by the Sisters of Notre Dame. The school building was complete in 1929, and the convent was finished in 1949, with the rectory being built a year afterward. To honor a deceased former Jesuit priest of Gesu Church, the Sullivan Center was erected in 1998. In 2004, the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales (OSFS) officially became the administrators of the parish.
At Gesu, all of the grades take field trips to area locations, including The Toledo Zoo, The Toledo Museum of Art, and the sixth grade five-day trip to Camp Storer.
The school sponsors several athletic teams, all of which are organized by the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). The sport options include soccer, volleyball, football, cheerleading, baseball, softball, cross country, track and field, and basketball. To join a team, one must either attend to Gesu School or belong to the parish.
Gesu has an Honors Choir and began producing yearly musicals in 2005, and the school has both Quiz Bowl and Math Counts teams that competes against other Greater Toledo Catholic elementary schools. There are also opportunities available for all students and parishioners to join Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. Gesu also has Power of the Pen, a writing group in Ohio.
The school has special tutors for speech, learning disabilities, math, & reading. Students also can use the TARTA bus service for transportation to and from school, and there is an optional Extended Day after school for students whose parents work.
