George W. Hewlett High School
George W. Hewlett High School (commonly known as Hewlett High School) is a four-year public high school in Hewlett, New York, which is a part of the Five Towns area of the South Shore of Long Island. The school is the only high school in the Hewlett-Woodmere School District (District 14). On March 13, 2008, Asst. Principal Thomas Russo was named Principal of Hewlett High School. His appointment became effective July 1, 2008.[2]
As of the 2009-10 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,078 students and 93.80 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 11.49.[1]
Academics
Hewlett is a National Academy of Music Arts and Sciences school and is one of three Nassau County Districts "that is certified as a CISCO CCNA Academy.".[3] There are 18 different Advanced Placement Program (AP) courses and three different courses for college credit through Syracuse University and Long Island University.
The school newspaper is the Spectrum.
Some of the long-standing traditions in the school include Cabaret Night (raises funds for the Laura Rosenberg fund at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center) and the Rock and Wrap it Up campaign.
The school also broadcasts a video show for students some mornings called "Video Homeroom" This show is taped and edited by students on a daily basis.
There is an active drama program (including a chapter of the International Thespian Society (ITS). School Clubs include chapters of the National Honor Society and DECA. Other activities include a Student Council, Model Congress and Mock Trial teams and various language clubs.
The Art Club is also an active program in HHS, where many students get together to create art. In 2011, the Hewlett Art club was asked to help out at a fundraiser for a program held at the Seawane Country Club.
The football field plays host to Turkeybowl-an annual football game dedicated to the memory of Adam Barsel, played by the graduates of the class of 2003.
Athletics
The sports teams' nickname (and mascot) is the Bulldogs. Previously the nickname was the Bluejackets - supposedly after the jackets worn by those in the Navy.
Along with numerous other sports, Hewlett prides itself in its Track & Field program which has seen success on both the boys and girls side, graduating many college runners. The program has also seen a great deal of improvement during recent seasons.
