Genetech is a fictional corporation in the Marvel Comics universe. It is located in Sayville, Long Island in the state of New York.
Genetech is involved in many scientific endeavors and appears as both an ally and an adversary of the superhuman team the New Warriors. Genetech should not be confused with the real corporation Genentech. The CEO of Genetech is Walter Rosen. Genetech was founded by Harmon Furmintz who ran the company until he absorbed the energy of Terrax, the former herald of Galactus. He was ultimately consumed by it.
In 1940, Harmon participates in a top-secret government project. He is rejected from it for being a hemophiliac. Although he was never able to find proof, he believes it is the same project that resulted in the creation of Captain America.
Later, Harmon works with Howard Stark, the father of Iron Man. He becomes a teacher to the young Reed Richards, who would later form the Fantastic Four.
Much of Genetech's funding came from the Taylor Foundation via illegal grants set up by Night Thrasher's guardians Tai and Andrew Chord. Tai and Chord were also responsible for murdering Night Thrasher's parents.
Walter Rosen also served on the board of directors of the Taylor Foundation after Tai was killed and Night Thrasher assumed full control of the Taylor Foundation.
In New Warriors #3 Genetech hired the Mad Thinker to gather data on the Warriors that they used to create their own superpowered individuals nicknamed Psionex. The team did not work well with others. For example, Pretty Persuasions kept seducing the people assigned to keep an eye on her, no matter the gender. Genetech had a hard time simply keeping the team on the premises.
The team came into conflict with the New Warriors again and again. The first conflict arose when the New Warriors investigate why Genetech is investigating them.
The resulting fights cause slight damage to the facility. Afterwards, Rosen promises to reign in Psionex and that Genetech will act more responsibility. The curious media is told that the New Warriors have assisted Genetech during a slight problem with an experiment.
Psionex rebels when they become dissatisfied with Genetech's treatment. Impulse severely injures Rosen during the breakout. The New Warriors are summoned. During the incident, Harmon absorbs the energy of Terrax. He escapes, demolishing much of the facility, leaving only about a third actually standing. Most of Psionex take the opportunity to leave. Impulse and Mathemanic help the New Warriors for their own reasons, both are injured and hospitalized. The Fantastic Four ultimately neutralizes Terrax.
Psionex reforms once again. The new team tries crime-fighting this time but go overboard, resulting in an innocent kid, Darius Clements, dying. Though the team was found not guilty, as Darius had an unknown heart condition, most of Psionex went back to Genetech, who gain official custody over them.
The New Warriors visit the facility to help undo the influence of Mathemanic, who was affecting the entire city over his guilt about Darius. After a reality-bending episode, Mathemanic is persuaded, seemingly by Darius himself, to let things go.
Genetech later loses control of the team to the United States government and the Thunderbolts program.
