Gelugor (named after Asam Gelugor, also known as Gu-Lu-Goq (牛汝莪) in Hokkien and Northern Malay) is a town located at the southern part of Georgetown, a midway town between Georgetown and Sungai Dua. It is made up of several residential commercial areas, namely Island Glades, Island Park, Minden Heights, Kampung Kastam (Custom Village), Taman Tun Sardon, Taman Brown (also known as Brown Gardens), Bukit Gambir (sometimes spelt "Gambier"), Bukit Gelugor and Sungai Gelugor (Famed for having the oldest Malay School in Malaysia, Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Gelugor). It is near some of the state's most prominent landmarks, such as Penang Bridge and Universiti Sains Malaysia (University of Science Malaysia). Reclamation works are undergoing near Penang Bridge to build a waterfront city. At certain times of the day, it is most possible to see cow-herding at the areas of Bukit Gelugor and Kampung Kastam. Even bullock carts can be spotted here, although not so commonly found. The areas of Bukit Gelugor, Bukit Gambir and Taman Brown has some of the largest Indian communities in Penang.

Residents who live in Gelugor nowadays find it very convenient to travel Northbound (i.e. to Georgetown) and Southbound (i.e. to Bayan Lepas with the construction of the Jelutong Expressway, which can be easily accessed via the ramp near Tesco Penang (Nearby Bukit Dumbar). Many buses make their stop near the bus stops nearby Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics (RECSAM) or the Shell petrol station across the road, easily accessible via the hilly roads and lanes of Bukit Gelugor. Also within the areas nearby, there are also many used-cars dealers of which you can actually get used cars (especially local makes and models)) at a very reasonable price, and also dealers of exclusive and imported car models. Also, there are also morning markets, wet markets and evening/night markets (also called Pasar Malam) especially in Taman Tun Sardon.

The Holy Spirit Cathedral of Penang Diocese is situated here in Gelugor's Island Park. The Penang State Mosque is also nearby Island Park, situated next to the YWCA of Penang.

A famous 'chee cheong fun' stall can be found in a Chinese coffeeshop in Gelugor. The coffeeshop is known as Genting to the people there. Genting coffeeshop is located in Island Glades.
