Garneau is a well known neighbourhood in the city of Edmonton. It is located just west of the Strathcona neighbourhood and just east of the main University of Alberta campus. Its central location gives residents convenient access to downtown Edmonton, Whyte Avenue, the Queen Elizabeth Pool, and other areas of the city.
The Garneau Theatre gets its name from the neighbourhood in which it resides. The neighbourhood overlooks the North Saskatchewan River valley. In the river valley immediately below Garneau are the Kinsmen Park, the Kinsmen Sport Centre, and the John Walter Museum.
Other neighbourhood adjacent to Garneau are Queen Alexandra to the south east and McKernan to the south.
Today, there are increasing amounts of dwellings in the Garneau neighbourhood that are high rise condominiums in buildings with five or more stories and low rise apartments in buildings with fewer than five stories. Most of these are rented, making Garneau an attractive location for students at the University of Alberta to live.[1]
Despite that, there are still some old French inspired homes roaming around, paying tribute to its Métis history.
