Gandhipuram (Tamil: காந்திபுரம்) is commercial neighbourhood and heart of the city of New Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, India. Before emergence of Gandhipuram as the largest shopping and commercial hub, Ukkadam and Oppanakkara Streets were termed as heart of Coimbatore city. It is situated in the middle of the city, the place is an important centre for shopping and entertainment, and also a major hub for the intra-city bus service.[1]

Geography

The nerve centre of Gandhipuram is Dr. Nanjappa Road. This road passes through the centre point of Gandhipuram. Gandhipuram shares boarder with Ram Nagar, Tatabad, Sivananda Colony, Rathinapuri, Sidhapudur and PN Palayam.[2]

Population

Gandhipuram has an approximate population of 1,25,000. Since this is a large commercial centre, it have a floating population.[3]

Gandhipuram possess similar climatic condition of Coimbatore City, as it is only a part of the city [4][5] highest temperature ever recorded is 41 °C and lowest is 12 °C.[6]

Economy

In the present economic scenario Gandhipuram is the largest commercial centre in the heart of the city. Almost all the industries in and around Coimbatore operates their corporate office from Gandhipuram. Cross Cut Road in Gandhipuram is the second largest Shopping Centre in Coimbatore City after Oppanakkara Street.[7]

To ease the traffic congestion on Dr. Nanjappa Road, Sathy Road and Cross cut Road the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu during the World Classical Tamil Conference 2010 announced construction of a flyover for about 148 crore at Gandhipuram.[8]

There are many play grounds in Gandhipuram which are used by localites for daily warm ups and practices. The present largest stadium of the city Nehru Stadium also situated just about 3 km from Gandhipuram.

Botanical Garden

The larger area of Gandhipuram was occupied by State run Central Jail. During the World Classical Tamil Conference 2010, the Tamil Nadu CM announced the shifting of Central Jail from Gandhipuram to Vellalore in the city and develop a Botanical Garden in the place.[9]
