Gamma Sigma (Rutgers)

Gamma Sigma (ΓΣ), The Georgian Society, is a coeducational, interfaith, inter-racial, social fraternity in New Brunswick, New Jersey, though no longer associated with Rutgers University or recognized by the Rutgers University Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs. Founded in September 1946 as the 'Lay Back and Whack it Club,' Gamma Sigma was revolutionary from the beginning having among its founding members a Jew at a time when interfaith organizations were frowned upon. This policy of inclusion continued in 1949 with the initiation of the group's first black member and in 1971 with inclusion of women.

House

Gamma Sigma currently owns and operates the house at 19 Union Street in New Brunswick in the area commonly known as 'Frat Row.' This house was built in 1871 and has been occupied by the Georgian Society since 1950. The house is notable for being painted an eye-catching blue and having been featured in Weird New Jersey for its distinctive cone tree (in this case a tree filled with traffic cones) in its front yard.[1]
