Freimettigen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Freimettigen is first mentioned in 1282 as Vrimuotingen.[3]
Freimettigen has an area, as of 2009[update], of 2.95 km2 (1.14 sq mi). Of this area, 1.88 km2 (0.73 sq mi) or 63.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.88 km2 (0.34 sq mi) or 29.8% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.17 km2 (0.066 sq mi) or 5.8% is settled (buildings or roads).[4]
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.4% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.0%. 28.8% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 35.9% is used for growing crops and 26.4% is pastures, while 1.4% is used for orchards or vine crops.[4]
The municipality is located on the north-west slope of the Kurzenberg, and a portion is in the Kiesen Valley. It includes the village of Freimettigen, the hamlet Dessikofen and scattered individual farm houses.
Freimettigen has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 432.[1] As of 2007[update], 3.1% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -11.5%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (94.1%), with Spanish being second most common ( 2.8%) and English being third ( 1.5%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 45.4% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the local small left-wing parties (11.1%), the SPS (11%) and the CSP (10.5%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 29.2% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 61.5% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 9.2%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Freimettigen about 86.3% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).
Freimettigen has an unemployment rate of 0.2%.
