In German, Frau (literally, "woman" or "Mrs.") was traditionally used as a title for married women, as opposed to Fräulein for unmarried women. It can be used with the first name or last name (Frau Anna or Frau Schmidt, the former is informal while the latter rather formal).[1] In modern German, Frau is used for both married and unmarried women, and Fräulein is used exclusively with female children (although sometimes Fräulein is used ironically for female unmarried adults, but not as an insult). Frau can be translated as Mrs. or Ms. in English; Signora in Italian; Madame in French; Senhora in Portuguese; and Señora in Castillian.
