Forte
Forte/Forté may refer to:
- Forte, /ˈfɔrt/ but often /ˈfɔrteɪ/;[1]. A person's strong point[1] e.g. Preparing gourmet cuisine is his forte. The term is derived from the French fort meaning strength, which does not include an acute accent. The latter pronunciation is likely due to a confusion as a false cognate with the musical term below which comes from Italian. For this reason it is sometimes asserted to be incorrect despite having entered common usage, with usage writers recommending the former as more strictly correct. Though the preferred pronunciation does not precisely reflect the French either, where it is pronounced closer to the English word 'for'.[2]
- Forte (music), a musical dynamic meaning "loudly" or "strong"
- Forte number, an ordering given to every pitch class set
- Forte (fencing), a fencing term for the "strong" part of the blade
- Trust House Forte, a British hotel and catering firm
