Força de um Desejo is a Brazilian telenovela produced by Globo TV and was shown in the schedule of 18 hours between May 10, 1999 and January 29, 2000, in 226 chapters. It was written by Gilberto Braga and as collaborators with Alcides Nogueira Marques, Lilian Garcia, Eliane Garcia, Philip Miguez and Mark Silver and directed by Mauro Mendonça Filho, Carlos Araújo, Fabricio Mamberti and João Camargo, with production of the core Marcos Paulo.

Nineteenth century, Vale do Paraíba, Rio de Janeiro. Higino Ventura (Paulo Betti) is the former peddler who enriched it with shady deals and who bought Hill Top Farm in the town of Vila de Sant'Anna, to approach his old flame, Helen (Sônia Braga), a resident of the farm neighbor, Golden Green, now married to the powerful Baron Henry Sobral (Reginaldo Faria).
He is willing to do anything to win back Helen, including buying the Ouro Verde and get the title of nobility and the same status of the listener. But Helen, though he loves her husband and disregard Higino, suffers at the hands of the Baron, because it knows that Abelard (Selton Mello), who raised him as his son is actually the son of Hyginus.
The couple's legitimate son, Ignatius (Fábio Assunção), does not conform to the cruel treatment that the father gives to his wife and moves to the Court. There he falls in love with Esther Delamare (Malu Mader), a beautiful courtesan. But her mother's death makes the young back to the farm to help his father and brother. In addition, splits of Esther, because of intrigues against two armed by Machiavellian Idalina Menezes Albuquerque Silveira (Nathália Timberg), his grandmother, who does not accept the involvement of the home with a girl of lower social class. But nobody in the family suspects that Esther Sobral is actually a courtesan.
Time passes and one day, Sobral know Esther Baron, with whom he marries. Only after the marriage is sanctified she discovers that he is the father of Ignatius, and all three will live in the same farm, without the baron suspect that his new wife is the great love of his son. Not satisfied with the fact that Esther did not accept leaving the Baron to live beside you, Ignatius married Alice (Lavínia Vlasak), the daughter of Hyginus coup Ventura and his wife, Barbara dazzled (Denise Del Vecchio), which only think of becoming a noble.
Meanwhile, Higino struggle to get the barony and buy the Ouro Verde in order to humiliate the Baron. Falls in love with Olivia (Cláudia Abreu), a white slave sought by the police and the young doctor who loves Mariano Xavier (Marcelo Serrado). Snubbed by the girl, Higino discovers who she is and denounces, then the purchase to use it as a sex slave. Then begins the hell of Olivia, who can not escape the clutches of Higino Ventura, even aided by her boyfriend and his friends, among them Ignacio and Esther.
But a fact that undermines the entire village of Santana: Baron Henry Sobral is murdered during the feast of betrothal between Abelard and sweet Juliana (Júlia Feldens) on the same night that Ignacio and Esther fled to live together. Local police then mobilized to arrest Ignatius, the prime suspect in the death of Baron.
