Functionality

FolderSizes provides a range of tools for analyzing, visualizing, and reporting upon disk space usage. File system analysis data is stored in a proprietary, in-memory database which can be saved in XML file format and reloaded later for further analysis or comparison (for trending purposes). File system analysis tasks can be scheduled for later (or recurrent) execution.

FolderSizes presents file system usage data using data tables, bar graphs, pie charts, and tree maps. Disk usage reports can be exported to plain text, HTML, XML or CSV file formats.

FolderSizes is written in Visual C++, and is compiled into both x86 (32-bit) and x86-64 (64-bit) forms.

History

The first version of FolderSizes was developed by Mark Richards and released in July 2003 as freeware. The core objective of early designs was to show the size of folders (along with files) within a graphical user interface that closely resembled that of Windows Explorer. Later versions added file reporting, search, scheduling, and other features.

In October 2003, the newly founded company Key Metric Software began publishing FolderSizes as a commercial software product.

FolderSizes has been subject to continuous improvement since 2003, with the feature set evolving primarily in support of business / enterprise needs.
