Florida's 22nd congressional district

Florida's 22nd congressional district is a congressional district in the U.S. state of Florida. Based in South Florida, the district encompasses the coastline from northern Broward County to the northern end of Palm Beach County, with a long finger jutting out into the northeastern part of Palm Beach County encompassing West Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens and another finger encompassing Boca Raton, Deerfield Beach, and Coconut Creek. A large majority of the city of Fort Lauderdale is included in the district, though part of the city is in Florida's 20th congressional district, represented by Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Also included in the district are the towns of Oakland Park and part of Cooper City.

The district is currently represented by Republican Allen B. West who defeated Democratic incumbent Ron Klein in 2010. West is one of only four African American Republicans (the other being Tim Scott of South Carolina, Gary Franks of Connecticut, and JC Watts of Oklahoma) to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives since Reconstruction.

History

The 22nd Congressional District was created after the 1990 U.S. Census. Republican E. Clay Shaw, Jr. was elected in the first election in the district in 1992 and was reelected for six terms until he lost to Democrat Ron Klein in the 2006. Klein served for two terms before being defeated by Republican Allen West in 2010 in one of the most expensive U.S. House campaigns for both parties that year.

The 22nd Congressional District was the center of the disputed 2000 presidential election in Florida and the ensuing recount.
