History

A branch line was opened from a junction at Mayne (Bowen Hills) to Enoggera in February 1899[1] and to Ferny Grove in 1918. The area was initially known as Ferny Flats, but the railway department changed the name of the railway station because of a Ferny Flats in New South Wales; the surrounding area followed suit.[2] The line reached Dayboro, via Samford, on 27 September 1920.[3]

On 5 May 1947, a packed excursion train derailed at Camp Mountain, after Ferny Grove railway station, in what is Queensland's worst rail tragedy, the Camp Mountain train disaster.

As part of a larger rationalisation by the Government of Queensland of its train lines, the line was closed from Dayboro back to Ferny Grove in 1955 due to declining traffic.

Recent upgrades

As of December 2009, the State Government has announced the remaining 3.2 km single track section between Keperra and Ferny Grove will be duplicated. Ferny Grove station will also be upgraded, including increasing car parking to around 1000 spaces, adding a third platform and constructing a new bus interchange. It is proposed the Ferny Grove Tavern land be acquired to provide additional car parking as there are no other feasible design options to provide this additional car parking. Construction is expected to start in mid-2010 and be completed in 2012.

Work was recently completed to duplicate the track between Mitchelton and Keperra, and also to upgrade the intervening stations, Oxford Park and Grovely, to two platforms. This upgrade allows additional services to operate on the line during peak hour, and removes waiting times outbound from Mitchelton and inbound from Keperra.

Line guide and services

Most services stop at all stations to Roma Street railway station. The typical travel time between Ferny Grove and Brisbane City is approximately 27 minutes (to Central). During weekday peak times, a few services may skip stations between Mitchelton and Bowen Hills for faster travel times for commuters working in the Brisbane central business district.

Ferny Grove line services typically continue as Beenleigh line services.

Passengers for/from the Airport, Caboolture, Doomben, Nambour and Gympie North and Shorncliffe lines change at Bowen Hills, and all other lines at Central.
