Fence Records is an independent record label based in Anstruther and Cellardyke, Fife, Scotland which is owned and run by musicians King Creosote and The Pictish Trail. Other artists on the label include James Yorkston, Lone Pigeon, U.N.P.O.C., Kid Canaveral, Withered Hand and FOUND. The Fence Collective is the name given to artists on, previously on, and/or associated with the label.[1]
The label was founded in 1997 by Kenny Anderson, who performs under the name King Creosote, who, after the record shop he was working in went bust, began to record and sell the music of his friends.[2] The label has grown steadily in size, in terms of audience and of artist roster, since it's inception and now boasts a variety of musical styles beyond its initial folk slant.[3]. Fence have organised a number of festivals including Homegame, Haarfest and Hott Loggz, which all take place in Ansturther and Cellardyke and Away Game which took place on the Isle of Eigg. Various festivals have also hosted Fence Nights/Showcases including Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Glasgow's West End Festival.
