Fauji (Devanagari: फौजी, Nastaliq: فوجی, translation: "Soldier") (1988) was a TV series following the training of an Indian Army commando regiment that aired on India's national channel DD National in 1988. It was produced by New Film Addicts pvt ltd. Mr Milin Kapoor was a Director in this company.He was to play the main role of Lt. Abhimanyu Rai that Shahrukh Khan ended up doing because Milin Kapoor was a brilliant cinematographer and editor who chose to shoot and edit Fauji as he was the most capable.. The six feet two inches tall and extremely handsome Milin Kapoor chose to be behind the scenes to create the series Fauji starring Shahrukh Khan that went on to become a mega success. This was not his debut role as is popularly believed. His debut role in TV serials was in Dil Dariya where he went quite unnoticed.The magic of Fauji transformed him into an overnight celebrity. The character played by Khan (Abhimanyu Rai) gained instant popularity due to the brilliant writing, shooting and editing of the team of creators who were all young and deeply committed. Rohit Samarth a grand-nephew of the famous actress Shobhana Samarth and Rajesh Gupta who went on to assist Sooraj Barjatya in Maine Pyaar Kiya handled all the production work for Fauji. Amina Shervani actor, writer and director carried her newborn baby to the shoot and to the editing studio according to an article in MIDDAY. The character,Abhimanyu Rai was loosely based on Lt Col Sanjoy Banerji of the Corps of Engineers( Bengal Sappers).
