Fareway is a retail grocery store chain based in Boone, Iowa. It has more than 100 stores, most of them in Iowa, three in Nebraska and Illinois, and three in Minnesota. Founded by Fred Vitt and Paul Beckwith in 1938,[1] most Fareway locations are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.,[2] although locations in Omaha, Nebraska and Worthington, Minnesota open at 7 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. (but close at 9 p.m. during the Winter season).[3]
Services and departments such as dry cleaning and video rental are not present at most Fareway stores, although the chain has begun installing DVD kiosks at some of its stores.[1] Additionally, Fareway stores until recently did not sell hard liquor such as vodka, gin or whiskey but has started to sell them in new stores. Older stores still only sell beer, wine, malt beverages and wine coolers. Fareway sells USDA Choice grade beef, the U.S. Government's highest grade of beef that is normally available to American grocery stores, to go along with its groceries.[1] The store contains a unique "Carry-Out" service and is known for the high quality employees they hire. All Fareway locations are closed on Sundays and most holidays including Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year's Day, and 4th of July; most stores close early on Christmas Eve.
