Fandène

Fandène (or Fandane) is a small village in Sénégal about 7 km from Thiès. It is inhabited by the Serer people.

History

It was one of the villages of the old Serer Kingdom of Sine. On 18th July 1867 at The Battle of Fandane-Thiouthioune (commonly known as the Battle of Somb), the Serer people (devout followers of the Serer Religion) lead by their King Maat Sine Kumba Ndoffene Famak Joof defeated the Muslim jihadists when they tried to launch a jihad in Sine. Maba Diakhou Bâ, leader of the Muslim jihadist was killed in that Battle by the Serer King - Maat Sine Kumba Ndoffene Famak Joof.[1]

The closest localities are Thies, Lalane, Mont-rolland, Peykouk, Keur Dembaand Keur Diour.

Activities

A traditional market is held there every Wednesday. In January 2011, The Festival of Farmer's Seeds was also held there. [2]
