Place of origin of this surname Phogat: Charkhi Dadri, Haryana, India

Charkhi Dadri was founded by Raja Bilhan Singh, younger son of Maharaja Prithviraj Chauhan, all Phogats are descendants of Raja Bilhan Singh, current population of Phogats is approximately 350 000 people spread mainly in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan states, India.

Majority of Phogats are small scale land owners and farmers in and around New Delhi. Due to the proximity to New Delhi, national capital of India, the total land owned by "Phogats" is worth approx. USD 2 billions. Making them one of the richest tribes of India in terms of per capita land ownership. In real terms monthly income of majority of Phogats is on average is approximately USD 250. They are still sticking to mainly farming and Army professions.

Prithviraj Chauhan was the last Hindu king of Delhi. He ruled from 1172 to 1192. During 1178, some 17 people of Prithviraj’s vans developed differences with him and left his state and moved to different places including his son Bilhan.

Bilhan settled in Charkhi Dadri, Haryana.

Myth has that Bilhan wanted to marry Dharmanand Pawar's beautiful daughter. Dharmanand was a big landlord of that area.

Dharmanand agreed to this with the condition that Bilhan kills a dangerous lion by his own and show his mettle. Bilhan accepted this and went to the nearby forest on his own. He made a weapon by something and went to the nearby forest alone.

He re-appeared after two days dragging a badly wounded lion along with him and dropped it at Dharmanand's feet. When Dharmanand asked him why he did not kill the lion then Bilhan humbly replied that it is not polite to kill someone who has not done any harm to someone. Dharmanand was impressed by Bilhan's bravery (because he took control over that dangerous lion) and kindness(because he did not kill the animal) so he married his daughter to Bilhan. The very same weapon that was used to catch that lion, Bilhan named this blunt weapon "Phogat". After this everyone born of Bilhan was known as "Phogat".

In the fourth generation of Bilhan was born Kanaya. Kanaya had two wives and four sons, namely-Hansa, Singha, Lagha and Rara. The four sons founded four panas (sector) in their names. These were Hansana, Singhana, Laghana and Rarana around Charkhi Dadri. This way 12 villages of Phogats developed around Charkhi Dadri. Later 7 more villages were inhabited on that land and total 19 villages formed a Khap of Phogats.
