Eschert is a municipality in the Jura bernois administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is located in the French-speaking Bernese Jura (Jura Bernois).

Eschert is first mentioned in 1179 as Escert.[3]
Eschert has an area, as of 2009[update], of 6.58 km2 (2.54 sq mi). Of this area, 2.64 km2 (1.02 sq mi) or 40.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while 3.66 km2 (1.41 sq mi) or 55.6% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.27 km2 (0.10 sq mi) or 4.1% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.02 km2 (4.9 acres) or 0.3% is either rivers or lakes and 0.01 km2 (2.5 acres) or 0.2% is unproductive land.[4]
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 2.6% and transportation infrastructure made up 0.5%. 49.2% of the total land area is heavily forested and 6.4% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 8.8% is used for growing crops and 11.9% is pastures and 19.1% is used for alpine pastures. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[4]
Eschert is a star shaped village on the southern side of the Grand Val (valley of Moutier). A portion of the village is along the Raus (Sous la Rive) on the border of Moutier.
Eschert has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 378.[1] As of 2007[update], 13.5% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 10.3%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks French (83.7%), with German being second most common ( 8.1%) and Italian being third ( 2.8%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 37.7% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (24.8%), the FDP (20.2%) and the Green Party (7.1%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 22.5% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 57.9% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 19.7%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Eschert about 63.9% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).
Eschert has an unemployment rate of 2.33%. As of 2005[update], there were 16 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 8 businesses involved in this sector. 76 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 7 businesses in this sector. 27 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 6 businesses in this sector.[5] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
