After co-founding the company in 2006 the group launched the marketplace FlashDen, a marketplace for buying and selling Adobe Flash based items.[1] FlashDen subsequently changed its name to ActiveDen after a complaint from Adobe, owner of the Flash trademark.[2]
Collis Ta'eed was responsible for many of the side projects that eventually turned into the learning and selling platform that is Envato today.
Originally called Eden, Envato registered its current business name in August 2008 [3] as registering the Eden trademark was going to be too difficult.[4] The name Envato its not a real word, making trademarking it much easier.
Envato's second marketplace AudioJungle competes with sites like iStockPhoto and sells tens of thousands of royalty-free music and sound effects.[5]
Envato's third marketplace ThemeForest launched in 2008 [6] and specializes in WordPress themes of which it has over a thousand.[7]
In 2011 Envato launched its royalty free stock photo marketplace - PhotoDune. Despite only publicly launching in August 2011, the size of PhotoDune's file library has already surpassed any other Envato marketplace to date. [8]
On September 12, 2011, Envato's Marketplaces surpassed the 1 million member mark. To commemorate the occasion they put together a Million Members Infographic that detailed their growth throughout the years.
Envato's motto is "helping people learn and earn online." [9]
The Envato network is broken down into Tuts+ tutorial sites which offer technology-related tutorials [10] and marketplaces to sell digital products. Envato's network currently generates over a million dollars in annual revenue.[11]
Envato's Tuts+ network is one of the biggest of its kind, publishing tutorials on a wide variety of topics from Flash, photography, audio to Photoshop. And its marketplaces are similarly situated, with Envato’s ThemeForest as the current largest WordPress theme retailer.[12][13]
Envato also operates blogs which attract over 6 million visitors a month and generate over $150,000 a month in revenue [14]
Envato was instrumental in founding and hosting the inaugural Blog Action Day event in 2007 which attracted 23,327 blog posts published by 20,603 participating blogs including 19 of the Technorati Top 100 blogs at the time.
