ElmCityCycling
Founded in 2001, ElmCityCycling or Elm City Cycling is a cycling advocacy group based in New Haven, Connecticut. As of 2007, the group had about 450 members.[1]
Many participants are involved in the local Critical Mass ride, which begins at 5:30 on the last Friday of every month in Downtown New Haven.
The group's activities and achievements include:
- Promoting local rides and bicycle tours for events such as City Wide Open Studios and the Festival of Arts and Ideas.
- Helping beginning and casual riders become experienced cyclists
- Serving as a social and political networking group for the entire community
- Educating local residents and children about cycling safety, through events such as the "bike jamboree"
- Creating a dialogue between cyclists, public safety officials and government
- Ensuring that cycling safety is mentioned in local communications and flyers
- Advocating for bicycle lanes in the city, including, in 2004, the creation of the heavily-used Orange Street bike lane in East Rock.
