Edwin Holmes (astronomer)

Edwin Holmes (born 1838 or 1839, died 1918 or beginning of 1919)[1][2] was an English amateur astronomer.

He discovered the periodic comet 17P/Holmes on November 6, 1892, and his discovery was confirmed within days at the Royal Observatory Greenwich. Holmes managed to discover the comet when it suddenly brightened allowing Holmes to spot it, and the comet remained visible to the unaided eye for another 3 weeks until it faded away. 75 days later the comet once again brightened to unaided eye brightness!

Holmes was later awarded the Donohoe Comet Medal of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.
